Yes they can!
A good question from Mickey Kaus: If Hillary Clinton is so convinced she can win, but she desperately needs money, can't she and her husband just write her campaign a check for, say, $20 million? $109 million - $20 million still leaves $89 million, no? ... Then she'd be on solid ground asking others to sacrifice for her candidacy as well. ...(HT Glenn Reynolds.) Well, I think the Clintons certainly can (write a check) because they have the money, and can more than afford it. I can only see two reasons why they won't spring for the money though (as Mitt Romney did when he was running). Either they are greedy, or they are not entirely convinced that they can win. Or a little of both. I think they can win, so the most likely explanation is greed. (That and maybe a desire to avoid explaining the sources of their wealth.) posted by Eric on 04.23.08 at 04:43 PM

It would look bad if Hillary financed her own campaign. Its looks plutocratic, and it looks like nobody likes her well enough to send her even a small check, especially compared to Obama, who is getting a lot of small checks. Wealthy presidential candidates who financed their own campaigns haven't done well. Not just Romney. There was Nelson Rockefeller, Pierre DuPont, and others. chocolatier · April 23, 2008 06:05 PM $109 million was gross. The net was smaller (taxes, ya' know). $57 million, I believe. Not that $57 million is chump change, of course. Hat tip (somewhere-I-don't-remember-where) mrsizer · April 23, 2008 06:42 PM It wouldn't have anything to do with campaign finance reform would it? Of course if it did I supposed everyone would have known about it and said something right away... but I thought there were rules about how much and what you could even donate to your own campaign if you took public money. I will admit to having had a couple glasses of wine and very likely I'm not thinking straight at the moment, but thought I'd throw it out there ;-) Teresa · April 23, 2008 09:15 PM Post a comment

You'll remember that she *loaned* her campaign $5 million in January. Then she got some donations so she paid herself back.
At the time I wondered about her asking people for money when it doesn't seem as though she thinks it's worth it to do a little self financing.
I say, if you won't sacrifice a little of your own for *your* run for the presidency, why should I sacrifice any of mine?
