Why do they hate pigs?

Why, because the great Porky Pig defeated a suicide bomber, that's why.

And here's the video to prove it. Watch for yourself.

So now you know.

UPDATE: My thanks to Glenn Reynolds for the link, and a warm welcome to all.

For those who have trouble with the above, the YouTube link is here, and an alternative link is here. And another one here.

For the record, the video is titled "Ali Baba Bound," and it was made in 1940.

I've watched it a couple of times, and while I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, I have to ask something. Is it my imagination, or does that odd device the suicide bomber has strapped on his head bear a suspicious resemblance to a tube of lipstick?

MORE: Here's what I mean.

Oh my. That's going to be disappeared from youtube sometime soon for being un-PC in a way that was cool and amusing.

Thanks for finding it. I can't believe the suicide bomber thing has such a tradition in Arab culture.

It would be interesting if it did disappear from YouTube, because unlike so much of the stuff which never "disappears," the "Ali Baba Bound" video is squarely in the public domain:

I also like the "Unfair to Arabs" protest sign. When was CAIR formed? The grievance theme seems to go back some time.

coggieguy   ·  September 11, 2008 12:56 AM

Obviously, the traitors in Hollywood, ever conspiring with our Country's enemies, many years ago gave the Arabs the dual ideas of whining and 72 virgins... :-)

OMG....This was from 1940, or even before Pearl Harbor. It sort of pours cold water on the left-wing belief that US foreign policy is the reason that Arabs are dysfunctional.

In fact, this is even before oil was discovered in Arab lands.

One more inconvenient piece of evidence for leftists who insist that world history began in March of 2003..

It's cute, but it has nothing to do with real Arabs, except for the clothes. The 'suicide squad' guy has a Brooklynish accent; I believe he's a parody of a well-known character actor of the period, though I can't remember who.

The rifleman with giant feet is an allusion to a familiar toy - some kind of knock-it-over-it-pops back-up-doll.

That's one of the "banned" Warner Bros cartoons from the 1930s and 1940s that hasn't been shown on TV for something like 40 years. I vaguely remmeber seeing it as a kid - the scene with the "headache pills" reminded me. But it's just so non-PC they won't show it.

The inspiration probably comes from French Foreign Legion stories, some of which were fact, some of which were fiction. The fort looks rather FFL-ish, Porky's uniform looks FFL-ish, and the "WELCOME LEGIONAIRES" sign on "The Brown Lurbon" (Turban?) is a dead give-away.

Rob Crawford   ·  September 11, 2008 07:53 AM

He sounds like W.C.Fields, but so what. This is a master class on Arab culture.

Chang   ·  September 11, 2008 08:06 AM

The "beep beep" of the suicide bomber sounded very much like the Roadrunner of years later.

"Unfair to Arabs." Loved it.

Gringo   ·  September 11, 2008 08:46 AM

OK, the likely inspiration was the 1939 release of "Beau Geste" with Gary Cooper. It was a big hit, and close enough to the release of the cartoon to have served as inspiration AND still be in the public's mind.

Rob Crawford   ·  September 11, 2008 08:55 AM

Good lord...doesn't anyone learn history anymore?

In a nutshell:

WWI simply put the finishing touches on the gravestone of last vestiges of the Ottoman Empire. People like OBL grew up hearing stories from their parents and grandparents about the former glories of that empire.

The Muslims and Arabs want their empire back...with backpay and benefits....and a little payback. All for the glory of Allah, of course.

Warren Bonesteel   ·  September 11, 2008 09:04 AM

One more thing. The Muslims and a lot of Arabs worked closely with Nazi Germany before and during WWII. They fought for and were supplied and trained by Germany...because the Muslims and Arabs wanted their empire back. Some of those same Muslims fought during WWI for the same reasons.

Thus the cartoon. In 1940, some people in the West were paying attention to world events...and had personal, individual memories of Muslims and Arabs during the events of WWI. ...thus, the tone of the cartoon: "We whipped ya once and we'll whip ya again if we have to."

Well, there's the bell.

Homework, google: 'Muslims (or Arabs) WWI' and 'Muslims (or Arabs) WWII."

Hurry up. Don't be late for your next class, now.

Pop culture references galore—

The “Brown Turban” was based on the real “Brown Derby” restaurant (shaped like the hat) in Hollywood.

The long-nosed spy flipping the coin is meant to be George Raft, who often played gangsters—flipping a coin was a signature move of his.

“Confessions of a Nasty Spy” refers back to the Warner Bros. film Confessions of a Nazi Spy the previous year.

The signature on the “Official Communique” posted on the fort is “General De Livery”, a possible pun on the Vichy commander General de Lattre de Tassigny.

There's probably lots more than this that I missed...

"WWI simply put the finishing touches on the gravestone of last vestiges of the Ottoman Empire. People like OBL grew up hearing stories from their parents and grandparents about the former glories of that empire."

Bull. The Ottoman empire was quite moderate and modern for the time. It was MUCH better than the current state of Arab societies.

OBL wants a replica of a FICTIONAL caliphate with strict Sharia Law. The Ottoman Empire did not have strict Sharia Law.

Tood   ·  September 11, 2008 06:19 PM

Tood, I don't think Warren will disagree with that much. The operative insanity is not what the Ottoman Empire actually was, but what these jihadists have convinced themselves it was. They don't let reality intrude on their dreams.

An excellent point, sir.
