Let there be light
The days are getting shorter here in my new town. (Ann Arbor.) If experience is any guide, they'll continue to get shorter until December 21. The problem is, Michigan is further north than Pennsylvania, and as far as I'm concerned, the days were too short there in the winter. Quite frankly, I was suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), and it might have even affected my blogging! I shudder at the thought, because that might mean that my darker moments might reach out and make other people's moments a tad darker. And we can't have that, can we? So I'm thinking of buying one of those "light therapy" devices. Maybe something like this: Like water, air, or food, light plays a vital role in our daily lives and in our feelings of comfort and well being. Based on the latest scientific research, the Lumiram AuroraTM Full Spectrum Light System has been engineered for those who have shown to be adversely affected by the lack of Natural Sunlight, due to inadequate exposure of their living and work space or during the dark and depressing Fall and Winter months. But I'd better be careful not to ever run for public office, or else I might be accused of "eltism" by Keith Olbermann, who's now asking whether Sarah Palin has "ever been treated for depression or is subject to mood swings." Apparently she bought a tanning device instead of a Florida vacation. Hey, at least Palin's critics have finally decided to focus on serious issues. posted by Eric on 09.16.08 at 11:36 PM

Next time you see Keith, ask him if he's ever met a woman who DIDN'T have mood swings. Oh, that's me being sexist again. Oops. Billy Oblivion · September 17, 2008 01:51 AM "...ask [Keith] if he's ever met a woman..." There's your problem right there. He usually has to attempt conversation through a haze of Mace or pepper spray. Blademonkey · September 17, 2008 02:21 AM I think somebody'd better start tracking Sarah Palin's periods. Heavens, she might have her finger poised on the button when PMS strikes, and - WHAMMO! - there goes Turkmenistan or wherever. Ozwitch · September 17, 2008 03:21 AM The days are longer in Michigan until Sept 21, and then are shorter, than Philadelphia. The sun, however, is lower and dimmer. Ron Hardin · September 17, 2008 06:28 AM Midnight walks with Coco. Exercise helps I've found. Exercise with a happy, bouncy dog helps even more, and dogs get really bouncy and happy when they're out after dark with Daddy. Alan Kellogg · September 17, 2008 10:03 AM Post a comment

Eric, I discovered the solution to SAD when I lived in Portland, Oregon for three years.
COFFEE.
First pot, 5 AM. You'll catch New Yorkers getting out of bed at 8AM.
Second pot 9AM. Lunch time in New York started an hour ago.
Third pot 1PM. Almost quitting time in New York.
Stop after third pot if you notice shaking.
Your alternative is a quick trip to Hawaii in about February.
Good luck!
