Instructional Video

Via Jack Carino: Tech Support from the 1930s: How to dial a rotary phone. Jack is a friend from the Philippines who I met through Dani Molintas who wrote A History of Addiction. You can read more Dani at her blog Carpe Diem. You can read more Jack at Jack Carino. Jack is a collector of historical photos, especially of the Philippines. He is also an excellent photographer in his own right.

My high school got the rotary phone talk at assembly sometime in the 50s. Until then the operator said number please.

They changed all the phone number prefixes, too, from something meaningful to an arbitrary name.

I still have rotary phones in my (1970s) house. The computer modem uses tone dialing, however.

Thurber in the 30s had a thoughtful man pausing as he was picking up a two-piece phone, captioned ``A psychologist about to call his wife.''

There's more to calling than the video explains.
