My high school got the rotary phone talk at assembly sometime in the 50s. Until then the operator said number please.
They changed all the phone number prefixes, too, from something meaningful to an arbitrary name.
I still have rotary phones in my (1970s) house. The computer modem uses tone dialing, however.
