Problems in Asia
It has come to my attention that there are problems with the the temperature record in Asia. At virtually the same time NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies was correcting historical climate data with the assistance of Climate Audit's Steve McIntyre, a British mathematician discovered serious flaws in papers used and cited by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its most recent Assessment Report. The errors are so glaring that one might conclude fraud was involved. Such a conclusion would be premature. There are links to the studies involved and other links at the above url. H/T Reliapundit Update: 11 Aug 007 1711z Questions about the Russian data. Looks like AlGore's movie was aptly named after all. Just not for the reasons he thought. joated · August 11, 2007 8:05 PM Politically active scientists cannot be trusted. Period.

One of the major errors seen in the data-set has been pinned down: 01/01/2000.
A Y2K processing error that has caused major upwards discontinuity in the processing of the US datasets. If the Asian ones have similar artifacts, expect them to have similar problems (due to software involved).
As one individual has pointed out: the 'hockey stick' went flat.
Lots of head shaking all around... If other NASA/Goddard datasets on climate have similar problems from the software used, then the egg on the faces of NASA will be immense. The torrent of eggs heading towards the faces of the GW backers along with the laughter will be larger.
'An inconvenient truth' - Y2K done it! NASA has updated the US dataset and their webpage hosting same from what I have read.
Much thanks to the folks at climateaudit.org for doing the hard, on the ground work of finding climate stations with HVAC equipment built next to them and the Detroit lakes station that was the huge tip-off on all this. Needless to say those that push 'an inconvenient truth' are now bringing down climateaudit with a DOS attack.
For the US the new hottest year on record is... 1934. Five of the top 10 warmest occur before WWII.
Amazing things happen when you find your software has gone bonkers due to programming error.... reverse-engineering the work from the outside is nothing short of amazing, and my thanks to climateaudit and all involved on scrubbing the data and hard. Now, can we get back to *science* and away from hyperventilating?
