Upsetting The Political Apple Cart

Sarah Palin is upsetting the political apple cart by promising to support Republicans and Democrats who support her agenda. Here is an excerpt from the Washington Times posted at the above link.

The former Republican vice-presidential nominee and heroine to much of the GOP's base said in an interview she views the electorate as embattled and fatigued by nonstop partisanship, and she is eager to campaign for Republicans, independents and even Democrats who share her values on limited government, strong defense and "energy independence."

"I will go around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation," ...

"People are so tired of the partisan stuff -- even my own son is not a Republican," said Mrs. Palin...

Republicans and Democrats? That sounds like it might be a libertarian oriented coalition. Fiscally conservative and socially moderate.

And who might the Republican's be upset with in particular? None other than Illinois Representative Mark Kirk who the Republican Party is touting as a candidate for Obama's old Senate seat.

As one of the eight Republicans who helped a controversial energy and climate-change bill narrowly clear the U.S. House last week, Mark Kirk continues to take heat from members of his own party for the vote.

Much of the backlash has been anonymous, coming from critics who habituate dailyherald.com, local political message boards and other Web sites. Using screen names like "Right," "Fedup57" and "Reaganlives," they've called the Highland Park lawmaker a traitor to the GOP and the nation.

Other detractors -- including conservative broadcasters Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck -- signed their invectives.

"If you have a Republican voting for this kind of government, what is the point?" Beck said on his June 29 Fox News program as photos of Kirk and the seven other Republicans who supported the bill appeared on a mock "wanted" poster.

Rep. Kirk touted his vote as a "national security" vote. I would believe it if he had voted to make it easier to drill for American oil. But Waxman-Malarkey? Give me a break.

I have covered this joke of a Republican earlier in a couple of posts:
Mark Kirk Is No Traitor

Brain Dead Republican Enhances Party Image Here is how I started off that post:

And THIS abomination my friends is why the Republican party is in trouble. Big trouble.
Let me note that Alaska, where Palin was formerly the Governor, has effectively decriminalized marijuana.

So getting back to the topic at hand. I think Palin will do well in an era where "independent" is the largest and fastest growing political faction. Not to mention all the disaffected Republicans and PUMA Democrats. It looks to me like she is trying to revive the Reagan Coalition. She just might succeed.

Republicans might gain more converts if they'd drop their association with the Religious Right and with social conservatism in general.

As long as the Republicans are wed to the Christian right and are focused on "family values" and passing more drug laws, they will lose a lot of people who would be in their camp otherwise.

And what I REALLY want to know is how Capitalism ever came to be associated with Christianity! If there is anything Christ was definitely not, it was a capitalism. Early Christian teachings provide more support for communism than for free markets.

Give me a Republican Party that truly supports free markets as opposed to Crony Capitalism, and respects the individual's rights to engage in whatever strictly private and victimless behaviors s/he pleases and I'll become a Republican.

But until then, we have no one out here.

Sarah Palin can't succeed at this, or anything, because she's dumb ... and a quitter ... and she sees Russia from a small island in the Bering Sea ... and her daughter gave birth to her retard-baby ... and she's hot ... really really hot ... and her husband stayed home to take care of the kids which otherwise would be the feminist ideal ... and he's scorchin' hot too.

The reaction to Sarah Palin's resignation, especially as her post-gubernatorial "higher calling" comes into focus, reminds me of that old Kenny Rogers song. No no no. Not the one about knowing when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. "Coward Of The County," actually, in which ol' Kenny sang:

The Gatlin Boys just laughed at him when he walked into the barroom /
One of them got up and met him halfway cross the floor /
When Tommy turned around they said, hey look! ol yellows leavin /
But you coulda heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and blocked the door.

The lefties and RINOs has their fun with the quitter meme. We're about to move into "you coulda heard a pin drop" territory as Gov. Palin starts to build an independent, bi-non-partisan fiscally-conservative coalition.

I think the Christians of old understood the value of profit.

What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but he loses his soul?

Has no meaning if there is no value to profit. There may be other values that are higher. But still...

The conservative attempt to base free-market economics in religious principles was the work of William F. Buckley, Jr. and the National Review. It made a sort of sense at the time, what with the cold war.

As other posters have mentioned, this doesn't make a whole lot of sense in light of the christian ethics, but maybe Billy thought it would get him a lot of votes in the predominately christian America of the time.

It certainly isn't doing them any favors now, however.

I don't think the right has to divorce themselves from the Christians, just to rephrase their position back to the natural "classic liberal" position of federalism. It's probably the only position under which Christians have the opportunity to raise their children and live the lives they want without serious threat. It means giving up social conservative issues in places that don't want them (e.g., San Francisco and NY), but they weren't going to convince those people anyway. What Federalism does do is protect them from encroaching government that threatens their ability to live their lives and do what they want - such a goverment as we have today, for instance...

Now, I'm not a believer anymore, possibly because I went to 13 years of Catholic schooling (1st grade through 1 year of Siena College), but I really don't understand why people say that the ideal of Christianity is communism.

No, Christianity is about helping others, not taking their stuff to give to others. Christians can "tithe" or whatever they want, but they aren't about everybody getting their "fair share".

Christ wasn't against capitalism, he was against using religion for it (he didn't have a problem with moneychangers, he had a problem with moneychangers in the synagogue).
He hung out with publicans and sinners alike, He had no problem with prostitution, He was for "rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar's but unto God that which is God's". Wasn't He hanging out with rich folks when He turned water into wine?

The Christian problem with rich people isn't their richness per se, the problem is that the type of person who is rich is often a selfish bastid.

You're supposed to help your fellow man, do unto others as you would have them do unto you and all that, but I don't see that as, "Everybody needs to be equal" at all.

In other words, Christianity is about not screwing with your fellow man, not commie "equality".

If people would all act the way they should under Christianity then communism would be possible. That's sort of funny considering that most commies hate religion.

But every form of gov't would work better if people acted in a Christian manner, that would mean that people were honest and trustworthy instead of dishonest and untrustworthy. If the king and his advisors are good joes, then the kingdom will run well. If he's not (as in oh, say any commie country) then the kingdom will suck.

Anarchy would be possible if people acted Christianly, the most important role of gov't is to keep others from stealing your stuff or hurting or killing you. If people didn't steal or kill, we wouldn't need gov't at all. That's not communism, that's the Prof's "Rational Anarchy" from The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.
