The digital birth certificate truthers
I just received an email claiming that there is now "irrefutable, empirical evidence" that "Obama's birth certificate is a forgery." Please. Spare me. I know I've said it before, but this crap is playing right into Obama's hands, and I think it's exactly what he wants. (Like the "Obama is a secret Muslim" routine....) I'm glad to see that AJ Strata (who debunked this nonsense before) has now debunked it again: Techdude has given his groupies more false positives to run around and play their games with. He also showed, unintentionally, why the BHO COLB image could be real. He confirmed the paper upgrade and showed empirically that all the new COLBs, post 2006, shared the same traits regarding the impression of the seal. What makes this so incredibly tedious is that it's obvious Obama was born in Hawaii, and that there is a legitimate birth certificate somewhere. These arguments over digital images posted online are beside the point. What I'm trying to figure out is the exact goal of this particular conspiracy theory. If Obama was born in Hawaii (and I think it's quite obvious to any reasonable person that he was), then all they're doing is wasting time getting people who ought to know better all stirred up. And for what? Does anyone imagine that this will cause a single soul to not vote for Obama who had otherwise been planning to? Does anyone think it will somehow help McCain? Under what possible theory? Sorry to ask, but are the birth certificate truthers even McCain supporters? Not that a little thing like that would matter, but I have to say, much as their motivation puzzles me, I do admire persistence. Who knows? If they keep the birth certificate theory afloat, it might earn a place alongside the North American Union/Amero stuff, or maybe even the claim that the 16th Amendment was never ratified, so none of us have to pay taxes. MORE: Thinking things over, maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way. In fact, the more I think it over, I'd actually enjoy living in a dollarless country which no longer exists, where I don't have to pay taxes, and which is presided over by a man legally barred from holding office! There's a lot of goof room there. posted by Eric on 07.20.08 at 10:09 PM

It is not relevent whether we are McCain supporters or not. There are clear constitutional requirements - not suggestions - of the office of the president. Most voters will probably not care about fluff like BO being illegitimate or actually having a different name. Posted documents have been doctored. We want to know if this candidate is legally eligible for this particular office. bossmechanic · July 21, 2008 04:17 AM It is not relevent whether we are McCain supporters or not. Hey, maybe his real birth certificate had his religion noted on it? Brett_McS · July 21, 2008 08:16 AM Even Obama had been born in Kenya, he would be a "native born American" because his mother was an American. People pulled this same crap with Goldwater in 1964 (Arizona was a territory), and they are also pulling it with McCain (born in Canal Zone). What idiots! Bob S · July 21, 2008 08:42 AM My guess? Either Hillary! supporters looking to persuade enough delegates to dump Obama before the convention and give her the nomination, or Ronulans who are trying to use this issue to disqualify BOTH candidates so Mr. Dr. Senator Paul has a shot. It's a non-issue anyhow, since Obama's going to lose. brian · July 21, 2008 09:12 AM The Obama campaign could settle this instantly if they chose. That they have not done so suggests they do not want to kill it. This sort of nonsense hurts his opposition more than it does him, so as long as it continues at a low enough level, it's a no lose proposition for him. Let the Grassy Knoll folks make themselves look foolish. There's lots of room with the Truthers, the Faked Moon Landing nuts, the chemtrails loonies. As Napoleon is supposed to have said, never interrupt your opponent while he's making a mistake. I think Brian has it right - so far the silliest and least serious attacks on Obama have come from the Hillarists. They completely missed Reverend Wright while they were digging up Obama's kindergarten work. Steve Skubinna · July 21, 2008 12:17 PM Post a comment

First off, it is not "obvious" that Obama was born in Hawaii because so far, there is no authenticated evidence of it. What hospital was he born at? Were you there? Was his birth 'news making' at the time so there is a story in the local newspaper? Get real.
Secondly, since his campaign posted an image of a COLB on their official campaign website which is clearly invalid on its face (lack of a visible official seal, signature and redacted certificate number), he has opened this box of worms on his own. Whether you agree or not that his posted COLB is real, you should at least agree that a cloud of suspicion now hangs over it. Obama can end the suspicion by sending $10 to the State of Hawaii along with an authorization to release a signed and sealed copy to respected news organizations. The fact that he hasn't yet taken this action means that he is either using this issue as bait to divert attention , while knowing well that he CAN produce a real COLB, or just perhaps it is possible that he is not a natural born American. It's too bad our "motivation" for wanting the U.S. Constitution followed is ridiculed by people such as yourself. It's no wonder this country is going down the tubes.
