Another Way To Hide The Decline
I have been sitting on this story for a couple of days - waiting for verification. I now have some. Watts Up With That says that the CRU (of ClimateGate fame) cherry picked Russian data. And you probably couldn't guess this in a million years, but they left out the data from the coldest stations. They actually have a computer program that can pick out the special stations depending on their match to the desired result. At least they have a program that can do that with tree rings. Why not weather stations? Here is a bit from the pdf of the announcement. Climategate has already affected Russia. On Tuesday, the Moscow-based Institute of Economic Analysis (IEA) issued a report claiming that the Hadley Center for Climate Change based at the headquarters of the British Meteorological Office in Exeter (Devon, England) had probably tampered with Russian-climate data.I believe they did something similar with Russian trees. First you "goose" the "official" temperature record and then you go looking for data that backs up the desired results. Gotta keep the press releases coming. My question is: when did the Russians learn about the misuse of their data? How long have the Russians been sitting on the knowledge that their record was corrupted? I'm guessing that the Russians were in the same fix and as perplexed as the few independent investigators working in other lands. i.e. some were rather sure some data had been altered. Some were rather sure some inconvenient data had simply not been used. Meanwhile others focused on whether the ground stations were accurate, on whether heat islands of cities, or land use changes might be causing as much heating as CO2. And at least one found errors in the statistics and/or graphic presentations. But no single one person had the complete picture and data to prove much. I doubt the Russians devoted a great deal of effort to their suspicions either. Just guessing. I think it will be three years before we totally unravel what happened at Hadley and what subsequent scientific papers must be discounted or revised because of the poisoned well.
K · December 18, 2009 11:30 PM The Russians have done much to ruin Copenhagen. Yay! (I hate them as enemies but they're great as allies.) Eric Scheie · December 19, 2009 12:04 AM Billions and billions of dollars have been appropriated by the US Government for "Climate Research". Where did all that money go? And what did it buy? Jabba The Tutt · December 19, 2009 02:26 AM It should be obvious what's in it for the Russians. An honest CO2 reduction treaty sucks billions of dollars out of their natural gas income. I've been an AGW denier for a long time now, but I am suspicious of this development simply because it's from the Russians. What's in it for the Russians to come clean? And why now? Seems there is more moolah for the Russkies going along with the AGW conspiracy -- unless Putin really fears a declining market for Russian methane should the Europeans be more aggressive with alternative energy development.
