The Beam In Justin Raimondo's Eye

Over at Reason, Matt Welch spots Justin Raimondo geting huffy about ths guy:

Kostric.jpg

Quoth Raimondo:

This was widely interpreted as a not-so-subtle threat to the President, personally. And I fail to see how it could be understood in any other way. To carry that sign in one hand, and a gun in the other, is a declaration of war. .... Typically, some in the libertarian movement hailed Kostric as a hero. While we've had more than our our share of crackpots and scamsters in the libertarian movement, never have we had a significant organized grouping that openly advocated violence, or even flirted with it--at least, not until now.

There's just one wee little problem with Justin's forehead-dabbing, hand-wringing "oh my, that sign suggests violence, I think I may faint" indignation:

Raimondo's website consistently published propaganda generated by Randall (Ismail) Royer, a former CAIR employee now doing a 20-year federal sentence for terrorist activities. Recently, one of Royer's associates, Ahmad Omar Abu Ali, was charged with plotting to assassinate President Bush in collaboration with al-Qaida.

So, he was fine with publishing the terrorist Randall Royer with his merry band of Bush-assassins, but a guy with a sign at a rally alluding to a 1700s statement from Thomas Jefferson about resisting dictatorship is a dangerous loon who's discrediting libertarianism?

I'm not saying the sign is a good idea, but at least Kostric hasn't actually tried to kill anyone.

It's easy to dismiss someone like Raimondo with his connections to Muslims, including attending a West bashing convention in Malaysia.
But the point he makes is legitimate.
There are now almost open threats appearing on right wing blogs. I hope this is just bluster borne of frustration.
Here's a veiled call for a coup from Victor Davis Hanson's current comment section:
"One can only hope, then, that our military remains “right” enough to instead stand with the people and the Constitution and do a little Honduras on Washington."
Or..."Obama won’t resign. Hitler didn’t. Stalin didn’t. These people are destroyers. They war to the death or until power is ripped from their hands."
Or..."I think the Obamites proceed with their agenda at their peril."

And then people appear openly with guns strapped on?

This has been discussed ad nauseam on the gunnie blogs and I think everyone has pretty much come to the conclusion that this guy's drop leg holster is a really poor choice to use in a crowded environment.

I used to know Justin Raimondo very well. 30 years ago we both very active in the Libertarian Party. I was very impressed, even amazed, at Justin's ability to remember vast amounts of information, detailed facts and figures that he could organize in his head and write about fluently. However, people with a lot of facts and figures often come to wrong conclusions, both logically wrong and more importantly, morally wrong. And that's the problem with Justin.

I don't think it's a specific threat to Obama.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a hint/history lesson to our political betters who are telling/trying to make us shut up.

I get lots of emails from people every day, there's like 2 or 3 people who forward everything they get to me.
Lately, I've seen lots of comments in forwarded emails from people who were never political saying stuff about revolution.

The political class has fallen out of touch with the electorate. They so obviously just want us to shut up and leave them alone.

People are getting angry.
Most Americans don't want to pay attention to the gov't, they want it to leave them alone and let them get on with their lives.

That's becoming impossible and as people are getting interested, they're being told to shut up, called nazis and worse.

I'm not advocating a revolution, just noticing that people who never said anything political to me have written stuff in emails that surprises me.

In some email about cops shooting a guy 67 times there was a comment in it that said something like, "Wouldn't it be cool if that was a politician?" or something like that.

I deleted it before forwarding it (it was an interesting email), but I've seen that and more.

Teh Peepul are seeing normal people being told to shut up, called names, physically beaten and even being arrested by our political betters and they're getting angry.

It's a question, not a call to arms. It is a good idea to remind politicians that if they step over the line we have the means to refresh the tree of liberty.

If that makes politicians fearful, good. That's the intent--to remind them, not to threaten them that the primary reason the Founders included the 2nd Amendment was to protect from tyranny WITHIN. They should be afraid if they abuse their positions. We should not be afraid of our government--our government should be afraid of us.

I think the answer to the question is "no way, not even close to needing that yet."

As long as the first two boxes are still available to us, the third box is not needed (and would be counter productive)... and I'd go so far to say that I'd use the 3rd box, if called upon, against those who THINK it is time to use it against our elected representatives.

1. Soapbox
2. Ballot Box
3. Ammo Box

I despise this Congress and this President as much as any liberty-loving individual, but they were properly elected by The People, and it would be wrong to deny people the government of the majority. The "refreshing" we need is one of education of the people to understand the dangers of electing socialists/fascists, like we have now. Unfortunately, it is the education from the school of hard knocks that will most likely wise up folks pretty damn quickly. Just wait until the Carter-era inflation kicks in to match that era's unemployment rate. Pain/misery is an amazingly quick and efficient educational tool.

Justin Raimondo is not the best person to be accusing others of discrediting libertarianism.
