The Civil War Was Not About Slavery

Gettysburg dead

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.
Chorus
His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on."

Chorus
Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

Chorus
Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

Chorus
While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.

Chorus
Our God is marching on.

From the wiki: The Battle Hymn of the Republic is usually played at the conclusion of the national convention of the Republican Party.

You are ignorant of history to say that the Civil War was not about slavery. Every single difference and conflict between the North and South had revolved around the issue of slavery--this is an undeniable fact.

Paul: That was the whole point of quoting the Battle Hymn: "As he died to make men holy let us die to make men free".

I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I am not going to argue the Civil War here, merely to point out an anecdote. I am the product of a North-South marriage, and have split my life in nearly equal parts between North and South. The right side won.

One year I went with my brother and his family to an annual family reunion of some of his in-laws: about 150 in attendance. They had a Family Reunion Song,which borrowed the melody from the Civil War song "Marching Through Georgia. Definitely a family based in the North, I thought to myself.

Thanks David,

Some times I get too subtle for my own good. Extra credit for you.

The last time I heard someone explain to me that the Civil War was not about slavery it was followed by an explanation of why slavery is sanctioned by the Bible.

This man - the one who was teaching me - is intelligent, but it's not his IQ which is relevant - it is his MQ.

Ronald,

This post was for the kind of people you mention.
