Separation
Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church, and the private school, supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and state forever separate. - Ulysses S. GrantI believe Grant was a Republican. I wonder if he could get elected these days. Cross Posted at Power and Control posted by Simon on 09.01.10 at 01:51 AM

U.S. Grant was a 19th-Century McCain: War hero, member of the Republican establishment, claiming his turn at the trough. He could damn sure get nominated if there were no Tea-party challengers. Elected, probably not. Regards, Ric Locke · September 1, 2010 02:37 PM I'm guessing that Republicans of the 19th Century were way more conservative (of American values) than the bunch that passes for Republicans these days, who are thoroughly infected with Progressive methods if not Progressive values. If you don't count the Drug War which was Progressive in its conception and methods and which has become a Republican mainstay. M. Simon · September 1, 2010 05:37 PM I don't see any real distance between Grant and modern Republicans. The idea that the Republicans are all Christian fanatics is just Democrat propaganda. All they really want is to end the active _hostility_ toward Christianity which has become institutionalized in modern government and education. (His remarks about education, for instance, would brand him a "Christian extremist" nowadays.) Trimegistus · September 1, 2010 08:55 PM Tri, Christians and Progressives TOGETHER gave us the public school system. As a means of indoctrination into Protestant values. It would be nice if Christians brought clean hands to the table - by at least admitting their mistakes. M. Simon · September 3, 2010 12:47 AM "Keep the church and state forever separate." Add to that a Commentary: keep each out of the the other's hair. Let neither put restraints on the other. As in, a cross out in the middle of the desert is no big deal. As in, if someone says "God bless" in public, let's not arrest him for hate speech. "M Simon" is a bit deluded. It was the teacher's unions that gave us the public school system we have today - mostly Progressives. ZZMike · September 4, 2010 01:30 AM Post a comment

Yeah, but I'm darn sure he'd never be elected by a modern Democrat.
