Friday Trivia Question

Via an email from a friend, who commented on Palin's latest victory ("another win for Palin, and I love how she drives the left insane") comes a trivia question he likes to ask his leftie friends:

"Who's the most significant US politician to come out in favor of decriminalizing marijuana?"
He then watches their heads explode at the answer.

Last night when I was feeling very gloomy, I complained about the bad choices we get and said that "sometimes, a choice is not a choice."

Well, a choice between Palin and Gingrich is a choice, and a real choice. I would vote for her over him in a heartbeat without any hesitation. (Had to strike "in a heartbeat," because they can hesitate.)

Palin is a little more nuanced than indicated. But still....

Palin fits the mold of a frontier woman, and Alaska is the last remnant of our frontier. Isn't it common for people with a past, and non-conformists, to seek out freedom in such a place?
If your life depends on the help of a stranger in the wilderness, you can't afford to be judgmental.
There is also the aspect of starting over, a kind of secular rebirth out there.

If Sarah Palin was on a sinking fishing boat, the last thing in her mind would be the personal lifestyle and smoking habits of her rescuer.

@ M. Simon: It was a while ago, but Palin either tweeted or Facebooked a comment that was less equivocal about decriminalization -- though admittedly not legalization. Probably immediately after her appearance on Fox, explaining her position.

Gradualist approaches always seem theoretically "incoherent," but they are (IMO) almost surely the most practical route to the right place.

As much as I favor the full legalize-and-tax result myself, in theory, I much prefer "half measures" that are politically feasible to the coherent, pure, and politically impossible.

What I find most interesting about those Stop the Drug War links is the combination of contempt for Palin and refusal to admit that she is more liberal (in the true sense) than Obama -- or any other nationally important Democrat -- on this issue. And hence closer to the writers' own views, as much as they can't admit it. It's the same story again: Palin drives the left insane.
