Who wants to look like a bigot?

Commenting on Byron York's post about how the Democrats outmaneuvered the GOP on ACORN (never mind the endless ongoing scandals), Glenn Reynolds opines that "Republicans are insufficiently relentless."

He's right, they are, and I think there's a poorly understood but well-oiled mechanism behind it.

When Republicans are relentless, they look like bigots. Think Jesse Helms.

When Democrats are relentless, they look compassionate. Think Clarence Darrow.

This is a longstanding principle of conventional political wisdom, enforced relentlessly by the pro-Democrat MSM.

Nothing fair about it, but I think it goes a long way towards explaining why the Republicans hesitate to be relentless.

The fear of looking like a bigot takes its toll, as does the fear of being called a bigot.

BTW, I think it's no accident that the outmaneuvering in question here took the form of adding "experts in the fields of consumer protection, fair lending and civil rights, representatives of depository institutions that primarily serve underserved communities, or representatives of communities that have been significantly impacted by higher-priced mortgage loans" (code language for ACORN) -- at the behest of the very relentless Maxine Waters, who wants conservatives probed for racism.

It's not just the looking like a bigot, it's the general character assassination and full-body-cavity search from relentless members of Minitru.

How many eminently qualified people said "No" after watching Clarence Thomas?

They're despicable and they're proud of it.

I really hate them.

I should also have said, look at how they hound effective Republicans out of office.

Newt was effective, while he wasn't lily white, he wasn't as bad as Minitru managed to paint him.

Tom DeLay didn't do what he was accused of when he resigned.

Look at how Bush is seen. He was a nice, honorable generally honest guy and he was viciously attacked by the tools slavering all over Obama right now. I'm sure I'll get responses to this calling me all kinds of names for not sufficiently hating those three. (or at least I would have if I hadn't pre-empted them).

I really hate Minitru anymore. They abuse the hell out of their Constitutional protections in an attempt to take the ones they don't like away from me.

They're bastids.

True that, Veeshir.

These people are beyond disgusting. They laugh at the "unwashed" masses (who happen to be their bosses...HELLO???)

I CANNOT wait until the Dim bloodbath next year during elections because NO MATTER WHAT they are going to OWN the economy...and it will be in shambles.

Get the popcorn because there is going to be a show!

They are also bigots and need to be called out on it. I live in Kansas. I'm a Republican. I'm a conservative. I'm an evangelical fundamentalist Christian. I home school. I like Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and George W. Bush. There are large groups of people who are bigotted (sometimes quite intensely) against people who fit in these groups.

To be far plenty of people are bigotted against New York, Democrat, liberal, agnostic, public school admirers of Keith Olbermann, Geraldine Ferraro and Barack Obama. I myself have a tendency to be bigotted against these folks. But I fight it. When I was a Democrat I was proud of being biggotted against Republican admirers of Ronald Reagan. I've grown a bit since then. But only a bit.

Yours,
Tom DeGisi

To be fair....
