Supplying humor for serious times?
Watching a recent White House press conference video at Politico, I am more convinced than ever that the White House is having fun and games with the Birth Certificate Truthers. (FWIW, I have tried to take their arguments seriously, but the whole thing seems designed to be immune to serious debate; I think that even if Barack Obama produced the "long form" copy they demand, it too would be labeled a forgery.) Here's the press conference video: From the dialogue between Press Spokesman Robert Gibbs and WorldNetDaily's Lester Kinsolving: ...Gibbs appeared incredulous. "You're looking for the president's birth certificate? It's on the Internet, Lester."Actually, it looked more to me as if Gibbs was having fun than being astounded. I think they want this to be an ongoing, burgeoning -- and above all funny -- controversy for four years. It beats having a serious debate over whether the country should head in the direction of socialism. Leftists want nothing more than to be able to paint their enemies as crackpots, and the more Birth Certficate Truthers there are, the easier that task becomes. Besides, the Truthers are funny, while socialism is dreary, and everybody wants a good laugh. I'm wondering why Bush didn't try this with the 911 Truthers. posted by Eric on 05.29.09 at 11:25 AM

This man look like "Major league dumb donkey" Old Russian saying...You can tell same lie 1000 time but not change truth! Difference between USSR Communist media and USA "mainstream media" In Russia government make media say what they want - even if lie. I Igor produce Obama Birth Certificate at www.igormaro.org Igor Marxomarxovich · May 29, 2009 05:20 PM But Igor, you posted the same comment here: And a nearly identical one here: http://althouse.blogspot.com/2009/05/american-people-are-not-absolutist-and.html I am doubting the originality of your comment. Eric Scheie · May 29, 2009 06:05 PM There is an old debating technique, which is to take your opponent's WORST argument and reply to it as if it is his ONLY argument. Seems like that is what Obama is doing here. So stop playing into his hands, doofuses. He was born here. Barring an unprecedented fault in our normal systems of documentation (which you have totally failed to provide), his birth in Hawaii is a fact. So move on, please. You're making the rest of us, who want to object to, you know, his actual policies and things, look like complete idiots. Anonymous · May 29, 2009 10:24 PM That last comment was me. Not hiding behind anything. Just hit the wrong button first. Sorry. HT · May 29, 2009 10:26 PM You're making the rest of us, who want to object to, you know, his actual policies and things, look like complete idiots. Well put HT. Thanks. Besides, the State of Hawaii has certified that he was born here, and it's an enormously heavy burden for anyone to prove that they're lying. The Truthers have not even come close, and they won't because they can't. (Truly a hopeless cause, even if you believe in it.) Eric Scheie · May 30, 2009 11:33 AM Post a comment

Better to forget the birth matter. He is President now.
The Electoral College made it so. They choose. The qualification clause instructs them not us. And if they didn't balk there is no other provision for enforcing it.
The President can be removed only by Congress. Does anyone want the courts attempting it. Judicial Activism is a hardly a popular position among those who would prefer O be gone.
As to the facts. I trust no government, including that of Hawaii, about much of anything.
I have no reason to believe, or doubt, this particular certificate. Historians will figure it out. And history is written by the winners.
