"Um, what I meant to say was..."
While I know Mike Huckabee was only kidding, remarks like this just don't don't work out too well in the world of politics. LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Republican Mike Huckabee responded to an offstage noise during his speech to the National Rifle Association by suggesting it was Barack Obama diving to the floor because someone had aimed a gun at him. Breitbart video here: I think he may well have blown his chance at the vice presidency. In any case, he demonstrated his cluelessness to the world. Moral lesson? If you're going to crack jokes about politicians and guns, be sure the target is Dick Cheney. MORE: The Breitbart video has been deleted. It has been clear since the Republican campaign debates that Huckabee is very flippant in his public remarks so it was only a matter of time before he said something really stupid. Send him to Comedy Central! Bob Thompson · May 17, 2008 10:37 AM Notice the lack of response as the audience realizes what an asshat Huckabee is. What responsible gun owner would point a gun at anyone haphazardly? It would have been funny if he'd said that Obama SAW a gun and dove to the floor, but he blew it and the audience knew it. What kind of politician cracks a joke that reinforces negative stereotypes of the group he's addressing? Chris · May 18, 2008 08:36 AM Post a comment

"Not in good taste."
I despise Huckabee, but is it just me, or does it seem that the spirit of the joke was in mockery of the sort of anti-gun fear-mongering that pretends NRA members would pose such a threat? His tone when he said that someone pointed a gun at him seemed so clear to me in its sarcasm.
