Charted again!

Every once in a while, I like to keep track of my political backsliding from God-knows-where to God-knows-where, so I take tests like this politics test I found via Jay at A Voyage to Arcturus.

My result always seems to remain consistently libertarian, which makes sense, as I still think pretty much the way I did when I first decided I was philosophically libertarian in about 1976. Since then, I've drifted from party to party, not finding much happiness in either. (The Libertarian Party, however, leaves me cold these days -- as it has since their view of self defense seemed to diverge from mine after 9/11.)

You are a

Social Liberal
(78% permissive)

and an...

Economic Conservative
(76% permissive)

You are best described as a:

Libertarian

I took that test a while back, and deemed "Capitalist"

I guess what bothers me the most about these tests is the questions really make my teeth itch.. "Blind patriotism is a very bad thing."

What the hell?

That was yet another extremely interesting spectrum questionnaire. I love the colors. Thank you! Spectrums, spectrums, spectrums, spectrums.... I love spectrums. Spectra I do love.

It said of me:

"You are a

Social Moderate
(43% permissive)

and an...

Economic Conservative
(90% permissive)

You are best described as a:

Capitalist

You exhibit a very well-developed sense of Right and Wrong and believe in economic fairness."

I have to agree with Darleen on these questions, though. Most of them were similar to those used in the Political Compass, in which I arrived at a similar score. Questions about child-raising, patriotism, religion, etc., in which I tend to have an "Authoritarian Personality".

Part of it is the confusion what between what is moral vs. what is or should be legal. E.g., the question about Holocaust deniers: I defend their right to spew their lies, but I equally defend my own right to call them liars. Even if somebody honestly believes those lies, his opinion is not as good as mine on that question. I know the truth. Yes, I am dogmatic. Automatic dog.

Here is an outstanding statement by an outstanding American, Arnold Harris of Mount Horeb, WI.:

all told, I am fed up with efforts to bend the US Supreme Court on behalf of a particular political platform, and I think a lot of other people share that mood.

As anybody who has ever read my comments knows, I support a wide variety of rights connected solely to the extent that they are handmaidens of personal liberty, without which our great republic cannot long stand.

These include but are not necessarily limited to,

-- the right of citizens to accumulate property, to trade it and to convert it to capital and invest it;

-- the right of citizens to keep and bear arms for purposes not only of sport but also of personal protection;

-- the right of women to solely determine and control their processes of human reproduction; the right of freedom of association;

-- the right of all persons to determine and act upon their sexual orientation, so long as their sexual congress solely involves consenting adults;

-- the right of all persons to determine and act upon their own religious philosophy, belief and orientation, or affiliation, or the lack of any such philosophy, belief and orientation;

-- the right to be left alone by government and all its works and agencies except in cases where an overarching public need dictates interference, and in such cases, solely for the duration of such need;

-- the right to reside safely in a stable society in which the government uses its agencies and forces to protect that society both from outright invasion or infiltration from aliens not entitled to take up residence among them without appropriate investigation and authorization;

-- the right to determine and mandate for their children the type and scope of education they prefer for their own children.

I cannot tell how many others share all these opinions, and I do not care. But what I want from the US Supreme Court, now and forever, is to guard and protect the Constitution of the United States so that the broadest possible mix of the rights I have described above shall be protected.

Because that constitution itself is what I see as the very fundament of a free society comprising free man and women living out their lives in dignity, liberty and self-fulfillment. Therefore, the cases chosen for deliberation and action by that great court, and the findings of the justices, where such action is deemed appropriate, are as important to the defense of liberty as the armies raised by the government for the physical defense of our country.

May the liberty of the citizens of the United States reign forever.

That spectrum reminds me of this color square here. Which reminds me of this color square also. Colors, colors, colors, colors.... I love colors. Colors I do love.

How about the Steven Malcolm Anderson Ultimate Political Spectrum Litmus TestŠ ? You'd be rich, and you could conduct spectrumology seminars, and the money could be used to launch your candidacy.

Darleen, I strongly disagreed with the "Blind patriotism is a very bad thing" statement, and it's probably why I'm not an anarchist.

But if you think about it, why is it a very bad thing for blind people to be patriotic?

Eric Scheie   ·  October 4, 2005 07:20 AM

My candidacy? For the funny farm? har! har! On the other hand, I would support your candidacy or Arnold Harris's for any office in the land, including the absolute dictator of the total population of the earth, in other words, the first ruler of the world.

Yes, I must devise an Ultimate Political-Religious-Sexual Spectrum Litmus Test.

As to "blind" patriotism, that reminds me of a story Chesterton liked to tell of a French patriot by the name of Deroulede, who advocated a plebiscitary dictatorship. A liberal warned him that his new Napoleon would knock him till he'd see all the colors of the rainbow. Deroulede replied: "I only wish to see three."*
