Racing Towards Riots
Erica Jong predicts that if Obama loses there will be a second civil war in America. One wag at the site linked (Hot Air) had this to say: Now let me see if I can figure out the order of battle. One side believes in gun control and the other side believes in the right to keep and bear arms. You know it is a tough call, but I'm betting on the side with more firearms training and firearms in their possession. If Obama loses it will spark the second American Civil War. Blood will run in the streets, believe me.The sad part is that this is starting to sound like a good idea. My ugly prediction? About 22 cities with disturbances that last more than a day and 15 with major arson. About 27 dead unless the arsonists manage to torch buildings full of people. My number one city on the list is Chicago. Obama already has Grant Park staked out. Just like '68. Number two? Detroit. And you know what? For once I hope my prediction is totally over wrought. Here is one case where I would love to be proved wrong. Totally. Cross Posted at Power and Control posted by Simon on 11.02.08 at 07:05 AM

There's more to it than just numbers of gun owners. Throw in numbers of veterans - I have a hunch that there are more who are Republicans than Dems - well, that's not quite fair, but there are certainly more on the side of maintaining the Constitutional than on the "take to the streets and smash the state" side. Then add in the cops, who tend to favor that whole law and order thing and are not likely to join the looters. Except perhaps in Ray Nagin's New Orleans, that is. And then we have the National Guard, which I can't see defecting en masse to the Bolsheviks. There will certainly be some violence if Obama loses - but I believe there will be some if he wins, too (and not from the right - it will be the same people in either case). The leftist intelligentsia, though - they can do the "who has all the guns?" calculus as well as anyone, and they'll opt out. As one of Tim Blair's brilliant commentors put it, don't bring a latte to a gun fight. Steve Skubinna · November 2, 2008 09:21 AM Really going out on a limb with predicting riots, mayhem and arson in Detroit! I agree. I predict that if Obama loses, there will be rioting, and torching cars and buildings in Detroit. I also predict that if Obama wins, there will be rioting, and torching cars and buildings in Detroit, because that's what Detroit does. Social unrest, sports championships, it doesn't matter. Any reason is a good reason to the denizens of Detroit to turn over a few cars and set them on fire. Rhodium Heart · November 2, 2008 12:06 PM So they riot and burn say a third of Detroit. What is that about $50,000 worth of real estate at todays values? I'm sure GM, Ford and Chrysler would love to collect some insurance on their empty factories. As for a civil war, yes the Left has some aged bombers but we have a national guard well trained to handle IEDs. Note to the revolutionaries, you got to get some of the soldiers, police, truck drivers, plumbers, farmers and coal miners or you got no revolution. Big ideas are good but you need people who actually implement them. JKB · November 2, 2008 12:17 PM Now let me see if I can figure out the order of battle. One side believes in gun control and the other side believes in the right to keep and bear arms. You know it is a tough call, but I'm betting on the side with more firearms training and firearms in their possession. In the near term, you're right. But don't forget the Left's unholy alliance with Islamic supremacism, or what the latter managed to do with a few boxcutters. Anonymous · November 2, 2008 12:40 PM (yawn)Yeah, they've got Grant Park "staked out" , alright. All the tickets to the election night event are sold out and all the police will be pulled out of the neighborhoods to keep the unticketed out of the event and away from Grant Park. Nothing will happen here in Chicago, either way, except a few more gang shootings and muggings in troubled neighborhoods lacking police presence that night. Yawn. Laura Louzader · November 2, 2008 01:36 PM Laura, I hope you are right. M. Simon · November 2, 2008 11:12 PM Anyone in a red state is most likely safe. Ponder that one. Something tells me Obama would be less likely to concede than his predecessors, and his subtle playing of the race card throughout the campaign will have convinced many that his loss was par for the course in the US of KKK A. It's a shame his campaign and his supporters kept preparing their partisans for the racist attacks that never came, because it sets the stage for a post-election blow-up.
