Is there a Moore's law for propaganda?

John Beck links to a brilliant post by Done with Mirrors* contrasting Hollywood propaganda of World War II to that of our present war in Iraq. Here's what he said about Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11:

How ironic is it that the most significant piece of Hollywood propaganda produced in this current war is lauded by the people who would burn Hollywood to ash and sow its soil with salt if they had the chance? The religious authorities in Iran scrapped the scheduled program at the Farabi Cinema complex in Tehran to put Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" on display. "This film unmasks the Great Satan America," a spokesman said. "It tells Muslim people why they are right in hating America. It is the duty of every believer to see [this film] and learn the truth."
He also praises Americans for avoiding crude caricatures of our enemies, and while I think he's right, I'm still in no mood to apologize.

* Never sure whether to call this blogger "Vernon Dent" or "Callimachus." (The former a classical Three Stooges character; the latter's a classical librarian....)

Lord Pork Pork vs. Frank Capra -- diametrical opposites

Diametrical opposites -- in every way

ya know, Steven, when I first read your comment I thought it said "Lord Pork Chop" (I realize your honorific for al-Moore is a play on Lord Haw Haw)

But it still works. :-)

I need to add, though, I think we have gone too much in the opposite direction. "We" are so afraid to "offend" so terrified of being labeled "intolerant" we have delayed and veiled the nature of the ideology of Islamism.

I quibble with the author that Tancredo was "casual" about bombing Mecca..I've heard the clip and he was anything but "casual." He, like many of us, was trying to give an honest answer to an unexpected question... can M.A.D. work with Islamists? It was certainly a risky answer and possibly foolish in the wake of the over-the-top reaction, but "casual"?

Um, no.

Darleen:

Thank you. I must give the credit that appelation ("Lord Pork Pork") of al-Moore (excellent!) to Arnold Harris of Mount Horeb, WI., who comments in Dean's World.

As to bombing Mecca, I would be very reluctant to do so, as it was a center of pilgrimages (to the Kaaba) long before Muhammad was born. I would first destroy Medina, where Islam was first established as a political entity in 622 A.D..
