Losing your head (when you have no head to lose)
Because I am so totally against censorship of any kind, and I like to encourage people to speak their minds freely, I never imagined that I would delete comments at this blog. But I have, and I don't like it. It's, well, depressing to see that there are people in this world who are so ungrateful that they have to hurl insults simply because they can't figure out how to download something. But here are comments from some recent visitors: Comments:I've been blogging for a year now, and I thought the blogosphere was a more intelligent, more polite place. Not that I can't handle disagreement, or someone asking a question, and it's fine to like pussy, but this is ridiculous. I think I made it quite obvious where the Nick Berg video is, but apparently some people are unable to do things like click on the word "here" when it's obviously written as a link, or else they are furious at me because the web server is overloaded and they have to try again or wait. So they simply hurl insults. I recognize the whole world isn't like this, but it doesn't take many people to lower the quality of life for us all. It bothers me that people will come to a blog and leave insults for a reason like this. I wonder what kind of people they are. What they do to the other people in their lives. Are they allowed to drive cars, to vote, to marry, to breed, to raise children and torment them? Again, it bothers me. I didn't think blogging would be like this. I know there are rude people like this in the world, but I didn't expect to find them here in the blogosphere. Of course, maybe this isn't the blogosphere. Perhaps I am not even writing this for my regular readers. Hope you're still coming, and please bear with me. For the people who seem incapable of following simple instructions, let me say one more time that the Nick Berg video can be streamed here, and a zip file is here. If that doesn't work, go here. NOTE: Please try to notice that when the word "here" is of a different color and appears different from the rest of the text, that means it is a link. Links are designed to take you somewhere else or (in this case) activate a download. If you can't figure it out, and you're still furious, I only hope you don't ever carry a gun, run a cash register, or work with heavy machinery, because we'll all be in trouble. posted by Eric on 05.18.04 at 08:45 AM

Classical Values has some terrific about the growing shrieking coming from all sides. My promise to you: while I do use potty language on occasion, I'll always try to keep this place positive and civil. It seems to be working. Even people who'... [Read More] Tracked on May 21, 2004 04:40 PM

How very odd! I just googled the name "Nerdington Barleywater" and nothing came up. Eric Scheie · May 18, 2004 11:51 AM I think he is from the Southfarthing judging by his manner of speech. Good pipeweed down there. The ISP was for some hosting company in Sarn Ford. Ghost of a flea · May 18, 2004 12:45 PM I'm surprised anyone leaves a nasty comment on this blog, because your writing is always reasoned and articulate. I'd be terribly jealous of your writing if I didn't realize how much hard work goes into it. I'd like to write as well as you, only without the work. I would like to take issue with you on your last set of quizzes, though. The childhood toy quiz said a Care Bear could beat me up. A Care Bear. How can I live with myself now? I'll have to get another apartment! Anyway, chin up & don't let the bastards get you down. Persnickety · May 18, 2004 02:02 PM I second that. Keep on blogging and to Hell with the retards who were expelled from kindergarten. There is no "right" to post comments on somebody else's blog. The blogger allows it as a courtesy, for which I am grateful. I am grateful, deeply grateful, that you blog in the first place, do so so wonderfully, and provide me with so many interesting links. It is not "censorship" to delete obnoxious comments from your blog, you're just taking out the trash. Leaving insulting comments on somebody else's blog is no more a "right" than is dumping your garbage on your neighbor's lawn. Censorship, in the accurate sense, means the government shutting down your blog, or shutting down Howard Stern. In defending Howard Stern's freedom, you are defending mine, and I thank you for that. You are a hero. Steven Malcolm Anderson the Lesbian-worshipping gun-loving selfish aesthete · May 18, 2004 02:23 PM Nice detective work, Nick! Thanks again -- and thank you Marie and Steven for cheering me up! Eric Scheie · May 18, 2004 04:08 PM Sure they have a right to free speech. And look! Blogger has *free* weblogs. Problem solved. They don't piss in your sandbox and you won't piss in theirs. Kacie · May 19, 2004 10:49 AM Just thank God you haven't encountered a vicious cyberstalker. I have been blogging for over a year and thought I'd seen it all. Now, I'm being harassed by a crazy freak who enjoys posting unbelievable lies about me on his blog, sending e-mail to anyone who posts a comment on my blog, and harrassing other bloggers when I post comments on their blogs. So, I'll spare you from having to deal with this nut by not using my real name. Here is some advice: If you get a strange of nasty comment, just delete it. Don't post is again on your blog like you've done here. That will only encourage the nasty troll to pester you some more. If someone isn't civil, just ban the IP and pretend it never happened. I wish that I had done that. Instead, thought I'd engage in a battle of wits. That doesn't work when your opponent is a psychopath. You Don't Want To Know · May 21, 2004 03:52 PM |

Someone called Nerdington Barleywater had some rather rude things to say about me in a comment overnight. I banned the IP without thinking about it. Nerdington's free speech does not extend to me paying to publish him.
