No Plan
I was listening to Sen. Tom Daschle on the Ed Schultz show tonight. I found out a couple of interesting things. First, Senator Tim Johnson will not be back to the Senate soon. He is now undergoing rehabilitation, no mention of when he will be recovered enough to return to the Senate. This means Lieberman is the swing vote in the Senate if the Rs and Ds keep their troops in line. Second, Iraq investigations are going to tie up the House and Senate so that Democrats will not be passing much of their agenda, according to Daschle. Third, when pointedly asked about the Democrat's plan for Iraq he avoided answering the question in any way shape or form. I think what that all means is that the Democrat's plan for the next year or two is to use the investigations into Bush's conduct of the war as a stalling tactic to avoid doing anything substantial. I think this fits in with a desperate plan to keep the Democrats From Splitting. Update: 10 Jan '07 0438z Senator Tim Johnson's condition has been upgraded from critical to fair. His recovery is expected to take several more months. Ammended due to a Power and Control Commenter re: counting heads in the Senate. Sorry, how is it a tie? 49-49-1 but Lieberman is caucusing with the Dems, and votes along party line would be 50-49. If Lieberman flips it's 50-49 the other way. Cheney would only vote if it's 50-50 or 49-49. Did another Senator check out and I missed it? Wish it were so, but don't see it. nichevo · January 10, 2007 03:45 AM The Democrats would keep their majority status it is true. However, if Mr. Johnson is not physically in the Senate he can't vote. That is the rub. M. Simon · January 10, 2007 07:05 AM > I think what that all means is that the How does one characterize the mendacity of someone who railroads a country into a military disaster and then criticizes the opposition for their lack of a plan to exit from the disaster? It's not merely mendacity, it's extreme cynicism bordering on nihilism. After troops are transfered from Afghanistan in the face of a Tailban offensive, Republicans are about to become former supporters of the first US president to lose two wars. Of course, they have a plan for this eventuality : blame the Democrats. goethean · January 11, 2007 10:46 AM goethean, Who said the Democrats had to have a plan? However, I seem to recall they wanted to pull the troops out. For that, all they have to do is cut off the money spigot at some date certain. This they are unwilling to do. (I don't think they have the votes for it. However, without a vote it will be obvious the dems never even intended to try to keep their promises. Fine by me. However, it is unwise to not keep your promises to the voters. You remember what happened to the last bunch that did that?
M. Simon · January 11, 2007 12:03 PM More mendacious cynical nihilism. Your supply seems to be unending. goethean · January 11, 2007 12:58 PM goethean, You left out "tripe" and "fecal matter". And a whole bunch of other stuff I'm too tired to enumerate. Perhaps you would like to revise and extend your remarks? We are always looking to improve the quality of discourse here and I must say you are a welcome addition. M. Simon · January 11, 2007 02:18 PM Post a comment

No, no, no. There will be no tie in the Senate so long as Tim Johnson is alive. Senator Johnson can be in a coma and breathing on a respirator, and remain a member of the Senate.
The Senate rules do not require a Senator to resign or be removed no matter how disabled he or she may be. He has to actually die first, and the Dems might embalm him and put him in glass case and say he is still alive. If so, the Republicans wouldn't have the guts to argue with them. The Democrats would keep their majority.
It is only if Johnson actually dies, and then only if the Democrats acquiesce in his death, that the Republican governor of South Dakota will get to name a successor.
But say that happens, how do we know he will name a Republican just because he himself is a Republican? Being a typical Republican he might name a Democrat just to show the Democrats he is fair, and nice.
