This used to be a pretty good country . . .

Bush is really blowing it bad. If you weren't already uneasy, read Bill Quick's call for impeachment:

Illegal aliens engaged in the crime of crossing our border have no rights! As for the treacherous Bush administration notifiying a foreign power of the actions of homegrown patriots, that goes beyond despicable, and assures that the administration has no further claim on my support whatsoever.

George W. Bush supports a foreign power engaged in fostering a criminal invasion of our country over the very Americans trying to stop that invasion!

Breathtaking.
(Via Glenn Reynolds.)

What's especially breathtaking is the lack of MSM reporting. I heard about this outrage -- yes, it is an outrage -- on the radio yesterday, and it was all over the Internet, provoking many reactions just like Bill Quick's. Here's Wizbang:
This is just unbelievable, MR. President, the Left hates you for just being you, and now you are alienating all those who vote for you and not living up to your Constitutional obligation to defend the country.

Now you are Helping the enemy! This is treasonous!

(Obviously, there are other reactions -- some of which are more emotional and less articulate.)

Whether Bush will be impeached is questionable (I doubt it, because even if enough people from both sides of the aisle want to impeach him, I think they have to agree on the same legal grounds), but what's particularly outrageous is that this major news is not being reported. Not, at least, in today's Philadelphia Inquirer. Couldn't find it in the Times, either, althought the big headline is "Poll Gives Bush Worst Marks Yet on Major Issues."

A poor time to stab the Minutemen in the back, I'd say. I know we're not officially at war with Mexico, but the president is still supposed to be on the side of the American citizens. Many of the Minutemen are people whose yards and ranches were literally invaded. OK, maybe "invader" is a strong word, more appropriate to war. I don't care what word you use. They're at minimum trespassers. I'd be pretty damned upset if some criminal gang was trespassing in my yard, and the cops refused to do anything. If I then armed myself to patrol my own land and the authorities then told the criminals where I was, why "breathtaking" and "treasonous" would be the mildest words I'd use.

No wonder gold is over $700.00 an ounce.

Why would you be surprised that a Republican President is aiding his constituency in importing low-wage/no benefit serfs to keep their costs down? Why is it a surprise that a Republican President is aiding the head of the Mexican Oligarchy in exporting its poverty so they can avoid democratizing their fiefdom? Don't you know what Republican now means?

Get on the bandwagon, baby, or prepare yourself for a lifetime of walking the dogs and cleaning the vacation homes of your betters.

Don McArthur   ·  May 10, 2006 09:14 AM

Don [insert Don Ackroid line to Jane Curtain here]

You realize, of course, that this has been a problem since...oh the turn of the 1900s? Certainly a problem when illegals were brought into Imperial Valley in the 30's to work the fields? Do you know the circumstance surrounding the bracero program that ran from the 40's until the early 60's and what happened after its ending? What about illegals that have been here for 15 or 20 years now or why amnesty was granted in 1986?

oh...but its all Bush's fault cuz of Big Business (let's forget the largest 'employer' of illegal aliens is individual American citizens picking up day laborers...)..just another RethuglicanHalliburton conspiracy.

[repeat first line]

Darleen   ·  May 10, 2006 10:09 AM

Darlene, I'll buy the 'ignorant', but my sexual habits are above reproach.

;^)

Don McArthur   ·  May 10, 2006 10:12 AM

And Darlene, what is it about this current iteration of the GOP that charms you? I voted Republican for 23+ years, and consider myself pro-business, pro-capitalist, conservation, small gov't, pro-individual rights. And yet I held my nose and voted against Bush during the last Presidential election. Could I have had a stroke? Had my mind kidnapped by liberal Scientology loonies? Or maybe just got tired of reading the likes of this:

"The Northrop Grumman Corporation, the largest builder of warships in the world, was on a charm offensive here Tuesday. Armed with slides and charts, Philip A. Teel, who runs Northrop's shipyards, led a phalanx of executives who laid out their case for another $200 million from Congress to cover losses from Hurricane Katrina..."

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/10/business/10northrop.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

These are not Republicans.

Don McArthur   ·  May 10, 2006 10:40 AM

Don

Am I 'charmed' by many of the current GOP congresscritters? Absolutely not.

But when Nancy Pelosi (!!!) is running around as if she is already speaker of the House laying out the "see? we DO have a plan" Democrat agenda if they capture the House in the fall ... raise the minimum wage, cut-n-run from Iraq, raise taxes and impeach GW ... why should I NOT vote GOP?? Have you any idea what a botoxed, inside and out, JOKE Pelosi is??

Our border with Mexico and Mexico's corrupt government has been a problem for over 100 years. And it is a multi-point problem. Unfortunately the Bush admin wants to address all the problems at once (secure border, increase sanctions against employers and create a guestworker program) which has people who hate one or two points all ganging up on it. Instead of working the priorities. #1 Secure the border. THEN we talk about the other stuff.

Bush was also Gov of Texas, a state with towns that flow together at the border and where families work and live on BOTH sides..and have for generations. He is also aware that the majority of illegals that come here do so because they cannot feed their own families by working in Mexico. I don't really fault 'em for that. I do FAULT American citizens that provide them jobs..with a wink and a nod...THEN blame the US government for "allowing" illegals.

For heaven's sake, in Los Angeles the police department has Directive #40...which instructs the police NOT to ever question a person's immigration status and NOT to ever detain someone for being illegal (even if they know it) or cooperate with INS. THAT directive didn't come from the Feds! And its been in place a lot longer than the current Fed admin.

One of our biggest problems with immigrants is not necessarily TOO many of them (unemployment is at its lowest in years) but their NON-ASSIMILATION. And just which political party is the champion of socalled "diversity" and "multiculturalism" and "identity politics"? And tossing out the GOP will mean LESS of that?

So, Northrop wants more Katrina money. This is news? Who in the area isn't trying to get the free Fed $$$ when the Feds were smeared in the MSM from coast to coast as "stingy" and "uncaring" yadda yadda yadda?

I want Congress in Republican hands, as flabby and complacent some of those might be, for another important reason.

President Hillary (get used to it, unless Condi runs. McCain is toast)

Darleen   ·  May 10, 2006 11:45 AM

Surprised the Republican administration are in league with the Mexican govt to import more cheap labor. When did you get off the train. Bush is a not very competent glove puppet for big business who basically own this administration so whatever they want they get. Open borders to admit cheap labor, outsourcing incentives, giveaways to big oil and big ag, a prescription drug bill written by the insurance and drug companies, tax breaks for the wealthiest. The list is endless. Of course he is against gay marriage and that makes it all ok. Wise up or stop snivelling.

Johann   ·  May 10, 2006 03:10 PM

wow Johann

ONLY Rethuglicans are at fault for over 100 years of illegal immigration from Mexico, eh?

Don? See? That is the dazzling intellectual analysis one can expect with the BDS wing of the Dems who back Reid, Dean, Pelosi, Gore and Kerry.

Darleen   ·  May 10, 2006 04:09 PM

Darlene, witty and seductive people have trained you to think 'derangement' whenever you read someone criticizing the President. You're conditioning yourself not to think. What Johann has written is essentially fact.

It's like Rush Limbaugh training people to think 'death tax' when they read 'estate tax'. It stops thought dead in its tracks.

Sure, Pelosi is despicable, Reid an embarrassment. But Barry Goldwater or Ronald Reagan would be befuddled at the actions of today's GOP.

Don McArthur   ·  May 10, 2006 05:25 PM

Witty and seductive people have trained Darleen to think what she really doesn't think -- because she's conditioning herself not to think?

Are you absolutely sure? You're not just saying this because you disagree with her, are you? I mean, Darleen has been coming to this blog for a long time, and to think she has fooled me into thinking she really thought what she thought! Those seducers must be awfully smart. I'm stunned and aghast.

What I want to know is where have these witty and seductive people been all my life?

Why do women get all these advantages?

Eric Scheie   ·  May 10, 2006 10:47 PM

Don

An estate tax IS a death tax. What makes you think it is not?

Oh, Eric... the wonderful witty people who have seduced me.... OH MY ... not an orginal thought in my head.

Hmmmm... I wonder, is the witty and seductive(tm) remark only a chocolate wrapped variation on the "you only say that cause you're on the rag" dismissal.

Maybe I'll join you in Stunned and Aghast.

Martini?

Darleen   ·  May 10, 2006 11:31 PM

Darlene, I prefer wine, thank you. And I think you do me a disservice. I've long held that the greatest of Limbaugh's sins was that he convinced blue collar workingmen that their interests were the same as that of the economic elite. Nothing to do with menstrual cycles, but if you need the frisson of insult, feel free.

Don McArthur   ·  May 11, 2006 09:45 AM

The greatest of Limbaugh's sins was that he convinced blue collar workingmen that their interests were the same as that of the economic elite? I thought Reagan did that with trickledown voodoo.

What if Rush was preaching to the already convinced?

Yes, Darleen, this calls for a Martini, "Stunned and Aghast." (That sounds even better than "Shaken, not Stirred" -- and goes well with the Frisson of Insult.)
