Classical settings
Two classical columns adorn an entrance to Valley Forge National Park, and here's one of them, taken while the sun was setting. Obviously evocative of a Roman legion standard, I'd say. [Also the mace.] More evidence that Classical values are deeply rooted in the country's history. Traditional, even? Here's a tree which appears to be losing the battle against fungus. Or maybe it's a fungus which is winning the battle against a tree.... The natural lesson might even apply to politics; if the parasites win, the parasites and the host will both die. Yesterday's sunset at Valley Forge was worth a shot too. As the expression goes, "Red at night, sailor's delight!" It works most of the time. That's why today was a beautiful, balmy 56 degrees! posted by Eric on 12.05.04 at 05:19 PM

So are you going to be spending Christmas at Valley Forge? B. Durbin · December 5, 2004 08:53 PM The Eagles are also a Philly football team. Pronounced "iggles." Christmas in Valley Forge sounds pretty cold. But if George Washington wants me to be there, I'll obviously have no choice. Eric Scheie · December 5, 2004 11:36 PM I-G-G-L-E-S -- IGGLES! Beautiful photos again. Thank you. You are an excellent photographer as well as a superlative blogger.
The eagle was a symbol of the Roman Empire, and now it symbolizes the American Empire. The Nazis used it, too. World War II was largely a War over who would be the Caesars of the Northern Western "Faustian" civilization. Much to think about....
