I Believe In America
In a comment to my post Oil Outlook Jay Draiman outlines a plan to get all new housing on renewables, with a ramp up period of 10 years followed by full roll out for all new housing after the ramp up. Here is the essence of his proposal without technical details: The federal, state and local government should implement a mandatory renewable energy installation program for residential and commercial property on new construction and remodeling projects with the use of energy efficient material, mechanical systems, appliances, lighting, etc. The source of energy must by renewable energy such as Solar-Photovoltaic, Geothermal, Wind, Biofuels, etc. including utilizing water from lakes, rivers and oceans to circulate in cooling towers to produce air conditioning and the utilization of proper landscaping to reduce energy consumption.Jay further goes on to state: I have a very deep belief in America's capabilities. Within the next 10 years we can accomplish our energy independence, if we as a nation truly set our goals to accomplish this.I reply to his proposal: I like your ideas in general. I favor wind myself. And solar.Jay, If you really had a deep belief in America's capabilities you wouldn't be wanting to put a gun to people's heads to get what you want done. That is why I went through and hit each and every alternative in my energy plans. Hydro is done. The easy wind resources are getting there and are unreliable even with 'steady winds', which folks have found not to be as steady as predicted. Ditto biomass. Algae is a massive undertaking and just not feasible anytime soon. So, incentivize space, push some money into results oriented research, guarantee trips to orbit at a set price, and go for it. Lots of polluted federal land that folks can use for all sorts of things... so long as it is cleaned up in a hundred years or so.
Otherwise you wind up with a well run Soviet System. Which ends you up right where the USSR is... nuclear is a great stopgap and gen 3 and 4 reactors are very safe compared to coal and gas. Mandated 'good ideas' get you things like the Dept. of Education which hasn't solved the problem of 'why johnny can't read' yet... mind you he had problems in 1958 and the Dept. has only been around 26 years... worked out so well! Employing thousands of professionals now aiming to *continue* the problem!
I will take a pass on state-based solutions for most things. Can we just keep it down to the few things mentioned in the Constitution and chuck the rest? The Federal Gov't needs a RESET button.
