The best defense is a good chicken hawk!
Just before yesterday's Saudi-based DOS attack, Captain Ed announced the formation (along with Frank J. and Derek Brigham) of the 101st Fighting Keyboardists, and Derek designed this incredibly cool logo to go with it:
More from Captain Ed: First of all, the term "fighting keyboardist" describes our efforts pretty well, and we think the pseudo-military terminology is pretty danged amusing. Derek himself designed the logo.I'd add that there's a family of chicken hawks (as Ed's link notes, they're known as Red- Tailed hawks) nesting in my yard, and I enjoy watching them. (I don't like loaded terms, so I'll avoid speaking of "chickenhawk family values" and I definitely won't say "let us prey.") I'll try to get some photos of my raptor friends. UPDATE: Captain Ed thinks there will be more DOS attacks, but remains loyal to Hosting Matters: We've come under attack all day here at the Hosting Matters community, apparently by Saudis who have issues with free speech. Michelle Malkin has some of the background at her site, if you can access it. The only thing I know is that the folks at Hosting Matters have treated me very well, and I'm not going to burn my friends when they're getting attacked.I couldn't agree more. I have been delighted with Hosting Matters and the level of professionalism and support they provide. If they (and my blog) are attacked again, I will simply post at the Classical Values backup site. I've not heard of the redtail referred to as a chiken hawk, usually it's the coopers. And you would be hard pressed to find any raptor taking chickens, it may have happen long ago when chickens were much smaller, it is an excuse to kill them. Redtails are not "birdy," that's accipiters or "true hawks" such as the gos, coopers or sharpie. Redtails are buteos or "buzzards" (which are not vultures.)
I think the idea of redtail as chicke hawk is modern made by people who only notice that kind. Incidently it isn't the biggests, that's the ferruginous. Also north American. It should be noted that these 2 unlike European buzzards are useful for falconry, the redtail is widespread I suppose in the sense that it has been widely exported to Europe, though the gos has a much wider range being distrubuted acroos N. America, Europe and Asia. The redtail does occupy a larger variety of habitats in the lower 48.
