For those who think a dog is no different from a fish . . .

Might sadistic humans have found succor in an anti-fishing campaign?

This absolutely sickening practice (warning -- it's an awful picture and story) of putting large hooks through dogs' snouts, then using them as shark bait, reminds me of something I saw at this anti-fishing web site, where another picture of a dog with a hook through its mouth is featured -- along with this "moral equivalency" argument:

Fishing is just as cruel as tossing Rover a biscuit on a hook and then reeling in the old boy. The only difference is that Rover is cute and cuddly. But don't let the scales and gills fool you: Those fish have feelings, too.

I only hope that's not where the bastards got the idea....

FWIW, I think the idea that hooking live dogs is the moral equivalent of fishing is almost as morally heinous as saying it would be the same thing to put a hook through a living child.

UPDATE: I found the above story at the Drudge Report, which notes:

**WARNING GRAPHIC**: DOGS USED AS SHARK BAIT IN FRANCE...
It's so horrible (and seems so utterly inhumane) that I feel skeptical about it. (Why no blood in the picture?) But I'm feeling skeptical about everything these days. And the story appears to have found confirmation with this report of an arrest.

Is there such a thing as Skepticism Burnout Syndrome?

UDPATE: There's speculation here that this might be a hoax. (I sure hope it is.)

I love to eat fish and I love to watch men fish. Fishing is a tradition as old as mankind, and so is the love of a man for his dog. The radicals seek to eradicate that all which is ancient, to eradicate the entire human past, in order to build their collectivist utopia on the ruins -- a One-World Socialist Social Change. I'm against that. I'm Conservative.

Some years ago I got a number of emails about animal cruelty. Two consistent items were (1) greyhound puppies, which are largely unwanted by the breeders, were being used as live bait for deep-sea fishing off Florida ports, and (2) Spaniards involved in greyhound racing seemed to take positive pleasure in destroying their losing dogs by the method of spreading their jaws open with metal brackets and letting them starve while chained to a tree or post. Occasionally they would add to their misery by beating them. The websites documenting the charges against the Spanish atrocities had a number of convincing photos.

You could probably locate the sites by a web search.

My sense of dogs as companions not food comes very much from seeing how much joy dogs are able to bring to shut-ins, convalescents, disabled, and even psychologically disturbed humans. No trivial thing. When it is demonstrated that such people can be made to laugh and recover from deep depression by a flounder, I will cease to eat flounder.

till then, pass the lemon.
