Criminal Outlets

If, like millions of people, you enjoy performing simple home repairs, you better hope you don't live in California. Beginning August 1, it will cost you -- big time -- to replace a two dollar light switch:

At least when it comes to electrical things, do-it-your-selfers may find their craft considerably more expensive.

Starting Aug. 1, when the 2004 California Electrical Codes automatically take effect, residents will have to apply for a city building permits to replace or add wall, porch and ceiling lamps, light switches, electric receptacles, and other common do-it-yourself chores.

So changing that noisy electrical switch with a quieter mercury switch will cost a lot more. Besides the costs of the new switch, there’ll be the $81 basic permit fee plus an additional surcharge of $2.15 for each receptacle, outlet or switch and—if you want to add more—$21.50 for altering or changing wiring.

Under the current city code, such small changes can be made without permits and inspections; starting Aug. 1, not so.

Not that anyone will obey these laws, mind you. They're just there to remind Californians that there's more freedom in Arizona or Nevada.

I know you have a bunch of commies in the legislature over there, but was this an openly-debated law? Or did someone slip this into a supplemental spending bill in the dark of night?

I moved out of the PRC in 1999 and it looks as if I will NEVER go back.

You pass a bad law,you get civil disobediance. Just something else indicating the idiocy of over-governing and contributing to well deserved disrespect and eventual conservative attitudes.

Geez, I wonder how many violations my father--the ultimate handyman--would have been guilty of.

Especially when he wired all the smoke detectors in the house together so that if one went off, they all went off. That, and installing the sprinkler system. And building the potting shet. And the deck. And installing all the ceiling fans... the list goes on.

Californian government evidently doesn't trust Californians to do anything for themselves--especially Thinking.

i doubt that its commies. did deep and you'll find lobbyists from the electricians unions, the construction industry, and home improvement companies - all famous for being communists :)

I would be in soooooo much trouble if I didn't live in Texas... where I have replaced both outside lights, six inside light fixtures, and one cieling fan, and put in two dimmer switches (And replaced the back deck, too...). I am willing to predict this will be the most disobeyed law in California...
