This poignant post brings a lot of heavy stuff back. (Sorry to use the 70s language folks, but this WAS the 70s -- the dark side thereof.) Jim Jones, the Peoples Temple. I remember that brief period the way people remember what they were doing the day JFK was shot. The Milk/Moscone assassinations were so close in time to Jonestown that people just assumed there had to be a connection, or else the whole city had gone crazy. Herb Caen wrote the darkest piece I ever saw. I was in my senior year at UC Berkeley; Harvey Milk had endorsed me for ASUC Senate the year before and I looked up to him. I was devastated, and then when the assassin was -- well, you know the rest -- you brought it all back and it isn't happy nostalgia. But thanks; I need to remember. I am glad a blogger of your caliber remembers too. posted by Eric on 11.26.03 at 10:08 AM |
